Addressing taboo topics

More than just the birds and the bees

Most of us feel uncomfortable addressing certain topics. I'm not going to attempt to go into details about why it's like this. I'd like to focus on how and when to talk to kids about these concepts.

Schools make little effort to teach kids about these topics and even when they do they are going about it in a "politically correct" way, which in reality means that the core of the issues aren't addressed adequately. Anything short of being blunt and brutally honest and we're wasting our time.

We want to shield our kids from reality too much sometimes and want to make sure they don't grow bitter or cynical. What's better then? Full disclosure or blissful ignorance?

How to talk about touchy topics?

I don't know. This part is TBD. I heard that many experts agree that being proactive and talking about uncomfortable issues is better than being reactive and then having to deal with far more uncomfortable issues and possibly irreversible damage.
